Nigerian Wrestler, Esther Kolawole aims for medal in Olympic debut

Nigerian wrestler Esther Kolawole has vowed to make a significant impact at her first Olympic Games in Paris, France.

The athletes and officials are set to depart Nigeria for Spain today to participate in a pre-Olympic tournament in Madrid before heading to Germany for their final training camp ahead of the games.

Kolawole, who competes in the 62kg category, expressed her determination to succeed at the Olympics during the unveiling ceremony of the Nigerian wrestling team in Yenagoa. She emphasized her commitment to securing a medal in Paris.

“I have prepared very well and hope to use the pre-Olympic tournament in Madrid and the training camp in Germany to gauge my readiness for the Olympics,” Kolawole said. “I promise to give my best at the Olympic Games and strive to finish with a medal.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Wrestling Federation has unveiled six athletes who will represent the nation at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The team, consisting of five female wrestlers, one male freestyle wrestler, and three coaches, was presented on Monday at a ceremony held at the Dynamite Wrestling gym in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The wrestlers unveiled include Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu (68kg), reigning African champion Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg), and Military World Champion Hannah Reuben (76kg). Joining them are reigning African champions and debutants Esther Kolawole (62kg) and Ogunsanya Christianah (53kg), along with Ashton Mutuwa (125kg) in men’s freestyle wrestling. The coaching team comprises Victor Kodei, Purity Akuh, and Happiness Burutu.
