Dr. Ikenna Erinne, a 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist based in the United States, reportedly ended his life after a court ruling in his contentious divorce case required him to pay his ex-wife $15,000 per month in child support.
The incident took place on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
Dr. Erinne, originally from Anambra State, had been embroiled in a protracted divorce battle, including a dispute over the custody of their children. Ultimately, a US court ruled in favor of his ex-wife, leading to the hefty child support obligation.
Clayton Udo, a Nigerian-American and advocate for mental health, confirmed the tragic news on social media, claiming the financial burden of the court’s decision contributed to Dr. Erinne’s distress.
Udo criticized the system, claiming that African men are disproportionately affected by legal battles in the United States, and described how the case had a devastating impact on the late doctor’s life.
Udo added that Dr. Erinne had already spent considerable amounts on legal fees throughout the divorce process, and the loss of his medical license compounded his difficulties.
“He lost his cardiology license and was faced with an overwhelming financial burden, including the $15,000 monthly payment,” Udo wrote.
“The whole ordeal drained him emotionally and financially, and ultimately led to his tragic death.”
Obim Onujiogu, another member of the Nigerian community in the US, also confirmed Dr. Erinne’s passing on Facebook. Onujiogu remembered him as a compassionate and dedicated healer, as well as a devoted family man.
He also announced that Dr. Erinne’s funeral would take place on Monday, February 3, 2025, in Maryland.
Onujiogu shared, “It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Dr. Ikenna C. Erinne. He was a loving father, son, and brother, and a respected cardiologist. He is survived by his children, Ugonna and Munachi, his parents, Engr. Chris and Mrs. Chinwe Erinne, and his siblings Chuks, Onyi, Kenny, and Gechi.”
A memorial service will be held at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge, Maryland, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by his interment at Meadowridge Memorial Park.
