Nigerian-American, Akinyemi Agbede enters California Governor’s race, inspired by Kemi Badenoch

Nigerian-born American, Dr. Akinyemi Agbede, has announced his candidacy for the 2026 California gubernatorial election, drawing inspiration from Kemi Badenoch’s recent rise as the leader of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom.

Agbede’s decision has generated excitement among his supporters and political associates, as he is no newcomer to California politics.

He previously ran for governor in 2014 and 2018 and contested for the U.S. Senate in 2016 and 2022.

In a statement released on Sunday, Agbede emphasized his commitment to public service, stating, “My relentless pursuit of the governorship in California is driven by my dedication to serving the state’s diverse communities.”

He further highlighted that his campaign will focus on educational reform, economic development, and social justice, key issues that resonate with voters.

Born on May 5, 1964, in Lagos, Nigeria, Agbede holds a Ph.D. in Mathematical Analysis from the University of Cambridge.

With a distinguished career in mathematics education, he has consistently used his expertise to empower students and advocate for academic excellence.
