The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that several Nigerians who relocated abroad are now struggling with regret and depression.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Dabiri-Erewa disclosed that NiDCOM has been inundated with distress calls from Nigerians lamenting their experiences overseas.
Her remarks were in response to a tweet by UK-based lawyer Dele Olawale, who warned that immigration policies in the UK were becoming increasingly unfavorable.
He advised Nigerians to carefully consider their decision before leaving stable lives behind.
“Many people are depressed. Many lives are broken. Many families are stranded. Irreversible regret,” Olawale tweeted.
He urged potential migrants to think carefully before relocating, emphasizing the need for legal guidance and thorough planning.
Quoting his post, Dabiri-Erewa reinforced the message, stating, “I hope this message resonates. We @nidcom_gov have been bombarded with many cases of regrets and depression.”
She also reiterated the popular saying: “The grass is not greener on the other side; it’s greener where you nurture it.”
With rising inflation, economic hardship, and a high cost of living, many Nigerians have embraced the “Japa” trend—seeking better opportunities abroad. However, some face unexpected difficulties, often finding themselves in worse conditions than before.
Dabiri-Erewa, who has consistently warned against desperate migration, previously called on the media to educate Nigerians about the risks of relocating without adequate preparation.
“Please, we appeal to bloggers and influencers: help us warn Nigerians that where they are running to may be worse than where they are leaving,” she said.
