Japa: Polytechnic lecturer abandons girlfriend with twin pregnancy, relocate abroad

A Nigerian woman has shared the heartbreaking story of how her boyfriend, a lecturer at Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, abandoned her after she became pregnant with twins, following his move to the UK.

The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, shared her ordeal on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter) under the handle #dat_edogirl, revealing the challenges she has faced since their relationship began.

In a series of posts, she recounted how she met the lecturer in mid-2019, quickly falling in love and believing they were building a future together.

“He confided in me about his plans to relocate abroad, where his elder brother was already living,” she explained, adding that the lecturer expressed his dissatisfaction with his teaching job and the desire for better opportunities overseas.

By 2022, the lecturer informed her that his visa had been approved. While she was initially excited for him, that happiness turned to heartbreak when she discovered she was pregnant.

“When I told him about the pregnancy, he discouraged me from keeping it, saying he wasn’t ready for fatherhood and would be traveling soon,” she recalled.

Despite his insistence on terminating the pregnancy, including suggestions to use pills, she refused due to concerns about her own health.

Unbeknownst to her at the time, she was pregnant with twins. Throughout the pregnancy, the lecturer cut off all communication, leaving her to face the journey alone.

“He never called, never responded to my messages, not even once,” she shared, adding that her pregnancy was fraught with complications, leading to frequent hospitalizations.

Eventually, she gave birth to the twins via Caesarean section, with one of the babies requiring oxygen due to complications. Even then, the father remained silent.

“I recorded a video of the babies and sent it to him, but he still didn’t respond,” she said.

The financial burden of the delivery soon became overwhelming. Her family struggled to pay the hospital bills, which totaled 233,000 Naira.

Upon discharge, she found herself solely responsible for caring for the children. “I named them myself, did everything on my own. He showed no interest at all,” she said.

Efforts to reach his family were unsuccessful. His brother in Nigeria, who had initially promised to intervene, eventually blocked her.

Desperate, she traveled to Ondo State with her mother and children, borrowing money to make the trip. However, they were intercepted by the lecturer’s brother at the gates of Adeyemi College of Education to avoid a confrontation.

When they finally met with the lecturer’s father, she faced verbal abuse and was devastated when he refused to acknowledge the situation.

In tears, she made the decision to share her story publicly, hoping for assistance. “If anyone knows his family in Ondo, please help me reach out to them. The cost of feeding, clothing, and education for the children is overwhelming,” she pleaded.

Clarifying her intentions, she added, “I’m not asking to marry Kola or rekindle any relationship. I just want my children to be taken care of.”
