12-year-old to represent Nigeria at prestigious US spelling bee

Amazing-Grace Ahuoyiza Salami, a 12-year-old student from Greenpath Preparatory School in Abuja, will represent Nigeria at the 100th edition of the renowned Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.—marking the country’s first-ever appearance at the global event.

Salami earned the honour after winning the maiden edition of the Spelling Bee In Nigeria (SpIN). As she prepares to compete internationally, she paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

During the visit, Salami shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming competition and the chance to engage with fellow spellers from different parts of the world.

According to a statement issued by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols at NiDCOM, Salami expressed appreciation for the encouragement she has received so far and promised to make Nigeria proud on the international stage.

Dabiri-Erewa, in her remarks, hailed the young student’s milestone as an inspiration to Nigerian youths, describing her as a symbol of national pride. She also underscored the significance of Nigeria’s debut in the century-old competition, noting that only Ghana had previously represented Africa at the event.

Balogun also noted that the NiDCOM chair reiterated the Commission’s dedication to supporting youth-focused initiatives that showcase Nigeria’s talent and excellence on a global platform.

Salami was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Kemi Salami, and Mrs. Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Country Director of the Young Educators Foundation, along with other team members during the visit.
