UK govt warns Nigerians against fake Visa, work, study offers

The British High Commission has cautioned Nigerians against falling victim to fraudulent schemes promising work and study opportunities in the United Kingdom.

The warning comes amid rising reports of scams targeting foreign students and job seekers with fake visas and employment offers, particularly in the care sector.

According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), an investigation uncovered a network in September 2024 that was selling bogus work visas and care worker jobs, leaving many applicants stranded after investing their life savings in non-existent opportunities.

The UK government highlighted that scammers often lure victims with guarantees of visa approval or claims of fast-tracked entry into the country.

It warned against paying individuals or agencies who demand fees for securing jobs, processing visas, or proving financial support, as such requests do not align with genuine UK immigration procedures.

To avoid falling prey to these schemes, the British High Commission advised applicants to verify job and study offers through official sources, including the UK government’s Register of Worker and Temporary Worker Licensed Sponsors.

It also urged people to rely on official guidance pages to identify common fraud tactics and ensure the legitimacy of their applications.

The UK government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting prospective migrants from exploitation and encouraged Nigerians to be vigilant when seeking opportunities abroad.
