President Bola Tinubu on Friday expressed gratitude to the Finnish government for the arrest and detention of Simon Ekpa, stressing that Nigeria will not condone divisive actions or statements.
Speaking in Abuja while receiving the Letters of Credence from Finland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin, at the State House, Tinubu commended Finland’s swift action, which helped preserve Nigeria’s unity and mitigate potential threats to peaceful coexistence.
The Finnish Ambassador, Ms. Selin, highlighted the challenges Simon Ekpa posed to bilateral relations, expressing optimism about improved cooperation between both nations.
In a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said:
“I appreciate Finland’s commitment to safeguarding human rights and the rule of law with the trial of Simon Ekpa. Nigeria is indivisible. We have endured turbulent times and cannot afford to promote terrorism or division.”
The President further emphasized the need for unity, saying, “I am a child of activism, but not of divisiveness. Stability and cohesion are essential for our nation’s progress.”
Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the rule of law, which he described as the foundation of the country’s democratic values and governance.
During the meeting, the Finnish Ambassador praised Tinubu’s bold reforms aimed at fostering economic growth, noting their long-term benefits despite short-term challenges. She added that Finland is keen on collaborating with Nigeria in areas such as energy, ICT, and peace mediation.
“We are impressed by the reforms in Nigeria, even though they are not easy. They are necessary steps for progress, and Finland is eager to partner with Nigeria in achieving sustainable development,” Ms. Selin said.
Additionally, Tinubu received Letters of Credence from the EU Ambassador, Mr. Gautier Mignot, and Algeria’s Ambassador, Mr. Hocine Mezoued.
In his remarks to the EU envoy, Tinubu acknowledged the EU as one of Nigeria’s leading trade partners and called for enhanced economic cooperation, particularly in digitalization and automation of services.
“Nigeria is implementing critical reforms to stimulate growth and prosperity. With your support, we can achieve greater progress and elevate the ties between our nations,” Tinubu said.
