NIN/BVN Linkage: Consider Nigerians in diaspora, WUCO urges CBN

The World United Consumer Organisation (WUCO) is urging the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to reconsider its directive for Nigerians to link their National Identity Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN).

WUCO, an advocate for equitable access to essential services for consumers globally, highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerians residing abroad in complying with the directive.

“The current directive poses significant difficulties for Nigerians living in the diaspora,” stated Mr. Clement Osuya, WUCO President and human rights lawyer. “It lacks viable means for them to remotely link their NIN and BVN, and it mandates physically visiting enrollment centers for biometric capture.”

WUCO expressed concern that the directive, coupled with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, could lead to over 70 million accounts being blocked due to non-compliance. They urged the CBN to immediately review the directive and consider the unique circumstances of Nigerians abroad.

The organization called for collaboration between the CBN and financial institutions to develop remote access methods and alternative procedures for linking NIN and BVN. These solutions should cater to the diverse needs of all Nigerian bank customers, especially those residing outside the country.

“Nigerians in the diaspora play a critical role in boosting capital flow into Nigeria and contributing significantly to the nation’s overall economy,” WUCO emphasized. “We urge the CBN to introduce robust and accessible methods for them to link their NINs to their bank accounts.”

WUCO reiterated its commitment to advocating for fair and equitable treatment of all Nigerian bank customers, regardless of their location.
