Nigerian striker, Josh Maja claims West Brom’s top scorer award sespite injury

West Bromwich Albion have announced Nigerian striker Josh Maja as the recipient of the club’s Men’s Top Goalscorer award for the 2024/25 season, as confirmed via their official website.

Maja’s achievement is particularly impressive given that he was only active during the first half of the season. The 26-year-old forward saw his campaign cut short in January after sustaining a lower leg injury that required surgery.

Despite his limited availability, Maja managed to score 12 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions, amassing a total of 2,077 minutes on the pitch.

He made an immediate impact at the start of the season, netting a hat-trick in the opening day win over Queens Park Rangers. He then found the net in three successive away matches, scoring against Stoke City, Portsmouth, and Sheffield Wednesday.

Of his dozen goals, eight came in away fixtures, while the remaining four were scored at The Hawthorns. Among his home goals was a standout brace on New Year’s Day during a 3-1 triumph over Preston North End.

Born in London, Maja earned his first and only appearance for Nigeria’s senior national team in a friendly against Ukraine under former coach Gernot Rohr. As the match was not a competitive fixture, he remains eligible to represent England at senior level.

Maja is a product of Sunderland’s youth academy and had a spell with French club Bordeaux before joining West Brom.
