UPDATED: U.S-born Robert Francis Prevost elected as new Pope, named Leo XIV

Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican announced on Thursday, making him the first pope from the United States.

Known for his moderate stance and close relationship with the late Pope Francis, Prevost brings decades of experience, including years of missionary work in Peru. He now becomes the 267th pope and will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
