Nigerian player, Aina reflects on his journey, pride of playing for Nigeria, Nottingham Forest’s success

In an interview for NBC Sports’ By Way of Africa series, Ola Aina shared insights into his rise in English football, the sacrifices that paved his path, and the honor of playing for Nigeria’s national team. Aina also touched on Nottingham Forest’s impressive season, revealing the mindset behind their “fairytale” success.

When asked about the sacrifices his parents made, Aina recalled their unwavering support: “They sacrificed so much—taking time off work to take me to training and games. They dedicated their time and effort into investing in me, and I’m really grateful for that. It’s all paid off, and they’re now living happily ever after.”

Aina expressed his love for playing for the Nigerian national team, especially the joy of playing in front of passionate fans in Nigeria: “I really enjoy it. It’s so much fun to play for my country, especially when we’re in Nigeria with all the fans.”

Looking back at his career, Aina feels a deep sense of fulfillment. “It’s definitely been worth it, and I’m still on my journey. I take great pride and joy in what I’ve achieved, and there’s nothing I would change,” he shared.

One of the pivotal moments in Aina’s career was his decision to leave England and play in Italy. “Leaving England and stepping out of my comfort zone to play in Italy was pivotal. It forced me to learn a new language and adapt to a different way of life,” he explained.

Aina also reflected on the many sacrifices his parents made. “I can’t pinpoint one specific thing, but they’ve made numerous sacrifices for me. Their belief in me and my dream has been remarkable,” he said.

When it comes to his current team, Nottingham Forest, Aina believes the club’s success is rooted in a strong sense of unity and hard work. “We stick to the plan, work hard for each other, and believe in ourselves. We’re chasing a dream that’s achievable, and hopefully, the success will keep coming,” he said.

As for his personal development, Aina believes he’s grown not just in skill but also in enjoying the game. “Last season was fun, but this season has been extra fun. The dedication has always been there, but now I’m having more fun on the field,” he explained.

The team’s energy and balance are key to their success. “We work hard when needed, but we also make sure to enjoy each moment. We have the right balance right now,” Aina stated.

Aina also shares his Nigerian culture with the team, especially through music. “Afrobeats is the easiest way to share our culture, and the boys love it, so it’s a great way to bond,” he said.

Representing Nigeria and Africa in the Premier League holds great personal significance for Aina. “It means a lot. I’m not just representing Nigeria; I’m representing Africa as a whole. There’s so much talent in Africa, and we’re showing it on a global stage,” he said proudly.
