Nigerian arrested in India for cyber fraud targeting pharmaceutical firm

The Cyber Cell of Delhi Police has apprehended a Nigerian national, Patrick Ngomere, for allegedly hacking into the email account of Family Care Pvt. Limited, a pharmaceutical company, and fraudulently diverting Rs 11.73 lakh (approximately $13,361).

Authorities revealed that Ngomere, who was also found to be residing in India without a valid visa, is suspected of being part of a larger cyber fraud syndicate operating across the country.

According to Millennium Post, an Indian news outlet, the arrest followed an investigation initiated after a complaint was lodged with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Reports indicate that Ngomere admitted to the crime.

The scheme reportedly began on December 10 when Family Care Pvt. Limited received an email impersonating its vendor, Accent Pharma, requesting payment to a new bank account.

Unaware of the fraudulent nature of the email, the company transferred Rs 11.76 lakh. The fraud was only discovered after the payment had been made and a subsequent verification was conducted.

Further investigation led authorities to trace the hacked email to Nigeria and track the stolen funds to a bank account in Manipur.

Surveillance footage provided key evidence, ultimately leading to Ngomere’s arrest near an ATM in Greater Noida. His mobile phone was linked to the fraudulent bank account.

Officials confirmed that an FIR has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Foreigners Act, and further investigations are underway.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, PUNCH Metro previously reported in January 2025 that Kuwaiti authorities arrested two Nigerian nationals for an armed robbery at an exchange office in Mahboula, a district in southern Kuwait City.

The suspects allegedly stole foreign currencies amounting to 4,600 Kuwaiti Dinars (approximately $14,918.69) and were apprehended within 24 hours by the General Department of Criminal Investigation in Ahmadi Governorate.
