FG secures freedom of six Nigerian women held in Cape Verde

The Federal Government has successfully facilitated the release of six Nigerian women who were unjustly detained in Cape Verde over allegations of human trafficking.

Their release was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which also stated that the women have now departed the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, it was revealed that the Nigerian Mission in Guinea Bissau played a key role in negotiating with Cape Verdean authorities to ensure the women’s freedom.

The Ministry explained that the women had traveled to Cape Verde for vacation purposes but were wrongfully accused of trafficking, an allegation that was later dismissed as baseless.

Expressing satisfaction with the outcome, the Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the rights and well-being of Nigerians living or traveling abroad.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce that the Nigerian ladies previously detained in Cape Verde have been released and have since left the country. Our Mission in Guinea Bissau engaged with Cape Verdean officials to secure this outcome. The women were initially accused of trafficking during their holiday trip, but the claims were found to be unfounded,” the statement read.
