Nigeria footballer alleges racism, slams La Liga refs

Christantus Uche, a Nigerian midfielder for Getafe, has expressed serious concerns about his treatment in LaLiga, focusing particularly on issues with referees and the conduct of some fans.

In his first season with Getafe after transferring from lower-league Ceuta, the 21-year-old has voiced frustrations about what he feels is unfair bias against him on the pitch. In an interview with ESPN, Uche remarked, “In the first few matches, I noticed the referees were making poor decisions. When I get fouled, they just tell me to get up. It’s a foul; they need to blow the whistle.” He pointed out inconsistencies, adding, “If someone else gets kicked, the whistle goes. It’s disheartening—you feel powerless because the referee has the authority to decide everything.”

Uche detailed specific instances where he felt overlooked: “I could be on the ground after being kicked right in front of the referee, and nothing happens. It’s not acceptable.”

Beyond officiating concerns, Uche also raised alarm about racism within the league. “Racism is unacceptable; it must end. Everyone deserves equal treatment,” he stated, recalling distressing comments from certain fans. “Some fans will shout derogatory things like, ‘f—— Black’ or other insults. This behavior is not right.”

His comments highlight the ongoing challenges players of color face in LaLiga and the urgent need for increased awareness and action against discrimination in football.

Uche joined Getafe CF on February 21, 2024, with the transfer confirmed shortly after by both the club and Ceuta. He signed a four-year contract and made his professional debut on August 15, 2024, scoring the equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao.

The issue of racial abuse in Spanish football is not isolated; Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior has also faced repeated incidents of racism, leading to a landmark conviction in June that saw three individuals imprisoned for their actions. Júnior warned that Spain could lose the right to host matches during the 2030 World Cup if these problems persist. “If things don’t improve by then, we might have to consider moving the location,” he said, emphasizing the need for a safe environment for players.

Despite these serious concerns, Uche remains grateful for the chance to play in LaLiga. “I’m thrilled to be competing at this level,” he noted. “Playing against teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid is a dream come true, and I’m determined to show my quality here.”
