NIDOA restates commitment to address ‘Japa’ phenomenon

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Americas (NIDOA) has reiterated its commitment to working with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) to address the impacts of the Japa phenomenon.

Japa refers to the trend where numerous talented youths leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad.

In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, NIDOA’s Chairman, Mr. Bukola Olaoye, and Secretary, Board of Trustees (BoT), Uche Uzoigwe, expressed their collective resolve. “We reaffirm NIDOA’s commitment to collaborating with NiDCOM to address the effects of the Japa phenomenon, as we believe in collective efforts.”

They added, “The current challenges can be turned into opportunities for sustainable national development.”

The group praised NiDCOM for facilitating the diaspora community platform and opportunities through the recently concluded 2nd edition of the National Diaspora Day 2024 Celebration.

The event, themed “Japa Phenomenon and Its Implications for National Development,” provided a platform for interaction and networking between Nigerians at home and abroad.

The group noted that the ‘Japa’ phenomenon, a colloquial term referring to the significant number of Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad, has been a subject of considerable debate among Nigerians in both formal and informal settings.

“The event, which held between July 25 and 26, 2024 at the Banquet Hall of Nigeria’s Presidential Villa in Abuja, witnessed a large convergence of Nigerians from all over the world.

“This underscores NIDCOM’s commitment to fostering stronger ties between Nigeria and her Diaspora Community.”
