In recent years, the Japa trend—where Nigerians seek better opportunities abroad—has continued to grow.
Many people are motivated by factors such as job prospects, education, security, healthcare, and the desire for a better standard of living.
This article focuses on two key motivations for migration: access to quality education and the ability to reunite with family.
Below are 10 countries that allow international students to travel with dependents:
1. Finland
International students can bring their family members to Finland if they have a valid study residence permit. Applicants must demonstrate financial capability and health insurance coverage. Required documents include proof of relationship, residence permit, valid passports, and evidence of accommodation.
2. Denmark
Students with a valid Danish residence permit can apply for a family visa, which covers spouses, children, and sometimes parents. Dependents can work or run a business during their stay. Applications require proof of relationship, financial capacity, and accommodation.
3. Malta
Malta supports family reunification by allowing international students to bring their spouses and minor children, provided the student has a residence permit and can support the family financially. A separate family visa application is required.
4. China
China issues two types of visas for dependents of students: the long-term S1 visa (for stays over 180 days) and the short-term S2 visa. The type of student visa (X1 or X2) determines eligibility. Applicants need to submit an invitation letter, proof of relationship, and possibly health insurance.
5. New Zealand
Eligible students can invite partners and children under visas that also permit dependents to work or study. The “Partner of a Student Work Visa” allows full-time work rights for spouses, provided the student is enrolled in a qualifying program.
6. Austria
Austria grants long-stay visas to spouses, children, and parents. Application fees and document requirements include marriage or birth certificates, criminal records, financial proof, health insurance, and proof of accommodation.
7. Australia
Australia allows dependents—including same-sex partners and children—to join international students. The duration of stay matches the student’s program, and spouses may have limited work rights depending on the level of the student’s study.
8. Germany
Germany’s family reunification visa allows core family members—spouses or registered partners over 18—to live with international students. Applicants must pay a visa fee and present documents verifying the relationship and financial support.
9. United States
The F-2 visa allows spouses and children under 21 of F-1 student visa holders to stay in the U.S. Applicants must show financial means and the visa remains valid as long as the F-1 holder maintains their status.
10. Canada
Canada permits international students aged 18 and above with an S-1 visa or higher to sponsor dependents. Eligible family members include spouses, common-law partners, children, and parents. A fee applies for each dependent included in the application.
