British-Nigerian boxer dies after pro debut fight injury

Sherif Lawal, a 29-year-old British-Nigerian boxer competing in his professional debut, tragically died on Sunday after sustaining a head injury during the fight.

The incident occurred at Harrow Leisure Centre in London during Lawal’s scheduled six-round middleweight bout against Portuguese opponent Malam Varela.

According to reports, Lawal was knocked down by a blow to the head in the fourth round. The referee immediately stopped the fight to allow medical personnel to attend to Lawal. He was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) expressed their condolences on social media, stating, “The thoughts of all those involved in Boxing in Great Britain are with them at this difficult time.”

Warren Boxing Management, the event promoter, also offered their condolences to Lawal’s family, friends, and coaches.
