Brentford set to sign Nigerian Defender, Michael Kayode, medical scheduled

Brentford are close to securing the signing of Italian-born Nigerian defender Michael Kayode, who had drawn interest from Premier League giants Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Sky Sports UK, the Fiorentina right-back is set to undergo a medical with Brentford on Wednesday afternoon, with an official announcement expected soon.

The 20-year-old has reportedly agreed on personal terms with the Bees, and a transfer agreement has been finalized between Fiorentina and Brentford. Kayode is poised to join the Premier League side on loan for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season, with an option to make the move permanent for £13.5 million during the summer transfer window.

Kayode has found limited opportunities this season at Fiorentina, often playing second fiddle to Brazilian right-back Dodô. So far, he has started just six matches across all competitions, a stark contrast to the previous season when he made 31 starts and recorded five goal involvements.

The defender began his professional career at Juventus before joining Fiorentina in 2021. While eligible to represent Nigeria internationally due to his heritage, Kayode has also garnered attention from Italy’s national team manager, Luciano Spalletti, who is reportedly considering him for a senior team call-up.

Kayode’s move to Brentford could provide the young defender with more consistent playing time and a platform to further showcase his talent in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
