Boston bops to the beat: March 2 declared “Burna Boy Day”

In a move recognizing cultural diversity and artistic excellence, the city of Boston has declared March 2nd as “Burna Boy Day” in honour of the Grammy-winning Nigerian Afrobeat artist, Damini Ogulu, better known by his stage name Burna Boy. This recognition celebrates his musical contributions and advocacy efforts.

The official decree, signed by Boston City Councilor Ruthzee Louijeune, highlights Burna Boy’s impressive musical career, advocacy efforts, and his role in promoting African culture globally.

The document cites Burna Boy’s “performances and advocacy works” as reasons for the honor. His electrifying live shows, captivating music videos, and outspoken nature have made him a global music icon, while his advocacy work has focused on social justice, representation, and equality.

This recognition comes on the heels of similar initiatives in other US cities, like Atlanta’s declaration of “Davido Day” in 2023, highlighting the growing impact and recognition of African artists in the American music industry.
