The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Ahmedabad has dismantled an international drug trafficking ring, arresting four individuals, including three Nigerian nationals, for smuggling ketamine concealed in spice packets.
The operation also led to the seizure of two kilograms of ketamine, a controlled anesthetic that is increasingly abused as a recreational drug.
Acting on a tip-off on December 3, the NCB team uncovered plans to ship two kilograms of ketamine to the United States via a courier agency.
The drugs were hidden inside spice packets of various brands. Following the investigation, the team apprehended Adnan Furniturewala, an Indian national, along with Nigerians Emmanuel Ifeni Nwobiora and his associates, Akeleme Ahmakula Joseph and Emmanuel Osaja.
Background of the Arrests
Adnan Furniturewala, originally from Pune, had a history of drug trafficking and faced three related cases during his time in the United States.
After being deported to India, he resumed his illegal activities. In 2022, the NCB Mumbai filed charges against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Furniturewala, who frequently changed locations to avoid detection, was eventually tracked down and arrested on December 8 in Bengaluru.
Investigations revealed that the ketamine was supplied to him by a Nigerian syndicate based in Delhi, which used courier services to smuggle the drugs abroad.
On December 18, the NCB apprehended the three Nigerian suspects from the Mehrauli area of Delhi.
Ongoing Investigation
The four suspects are currently in custody, and the NCB is working to trace the primary source of the ketamine supply. The agency has emphasized its commitment to disrupting drug syndicates operating within and beyond India’s borders.
