Riot: Nigerian govt issues travel alert for citizens travelling to UK

The Nigerian government has issued a travel advisory to its nationals planning to visit the UK.

In a statement signed and released on Monday by the spokesperson for the Minister of Interior, Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, the government highlighted the “increased risk of violence and disorder due to the recent riots in the UK.”

Nigerians traveling to the UK are advised to “exercise heightened vigilance and take necessary precautions.” These precautions include avoiding political processions, protests, rallies, and marches.

Furthermore, Nigerians are urged to stay away from crowded places and large gatherings while in the UK.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a stern warning to far-right protesters, stating they will “regret” their involvement in the country’s most severe rioting in 13 years.

The unrest, which erupted following the murder of three children earlier this week, has spread across England. Anti-immigration demonstrators have clashed with police, resulting in significant destruction.

In a televised address, Starmer condemned the “far-right thuggery” and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. He assured that anyone involved in the disorder, either directly or indirectly, would face consequences.

The riots were ignited by misinformation surrounding the mass stabbing in Southport that claimed the lives of three children. False rumours about the suspect’s background have fueled the violence, targeting asylum seekers, mosques, and Islamic places of worship.

Since Saturday, police have arrested over 150 people, and several officers have been injured in clashes with rioters. Shops have been looted and burnt, with footage showing rioters forcing their way into a hotel housing asylum seekers.
