Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate, was briefly detained by the Nigerian Immigration Service upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday but has now been released.
Sowore, who had just returned from the United States, was welcomed at the airport by members of the Take It Back Movement and other activists. His flight had departed from Washington Dulles International Airport at 6:14 AM EDT and arrived in Lagos at 9:43 AM WAT.
According to Sowore, immigration officials detained him and confiscated his passport without providing a reason. They only mentioned that they were acting on orders from higher authorities and needed to contact Abuja for further directives.
After his release, Sowore confirmed via his social media account on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I have just been released by Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention, and my passport has been returned to me.” He also used the hashtag #RevolutionNow in his post.
