President Tinubu hails Nigerian-born mayors in London

President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to two British-Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, on their recent election and inauguration as mayors in London.

In a statement released on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised both individuals for upholding the admirable legacy of Nigerians living abroad.

He commended their efforts in exemplifying values such as diligence, integrity, and a strong commitment to public service.

The President noted that the achievements of Bright and Jackson serve as a source of motivation for young people in Nigeria and across the diaspora, encouraging them to aim high and contribute meaningfully to society.

“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I warmly congratulate Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson,” Tinubu said.

“As you take on your responsibilities as the first citizens of Barking and Dagenham and Islington, I encourage you to give your utmost in service. I am confident in your capabilities and look forward to the positive changes you will bring to your communities.”

Opeyemi Bright recently made history as the youngest Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham at age 29, after dedicating seven years to community service.

She had previously been elected the youngest Labour councillor in the borough at just 22, back in 2018.

Jason Jackson also marked a milestone as the first Nigerian-born individual to assume the mayoral role in Islington since the borough’s formation in 1900.

Jackson’s swift political rise began with his election as a councillor in 2022, followed by his appointment as Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee in 2023.
