Nottingham Forest Manager Expresses Hope as Taiwo Awoniyi Recovers from Emergency Surgery

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espírito Santo has expressed deep concern but also hope regarding the condition of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who recently underwent emergency surgery following a serious injury.

Awoniyi sustained a ruptured intestine during a collision with the goalpost in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City at the City Ground.

Despite the severity of the injury, the 27-year-old remarkably continued playing before being taken to hospital, where he underwent urgent surgery and was later placed in an induced coma for close monitoring.

Providing an update during Friday’s press conference, Nuno confirmed the procedure was successful but noted that the striker is still under strict medical care.

“He underwent surgery, and thankfully, it went well,” the Forest manager told the BBC.

“He’s currently under observation, and we’re waiting for the doctors to permit visits. His family is by his side. We’re obviously concerned, but staying hopeful.”

The Portuguese coach acknowledged the emotional strain the incident has placed on the squad, revealing the players were visibly shaken by the nature of Awoniyi’s injury.

“It’s been tough on everyone—the entire team and staff. What he went through was serious, and we’re all feeling it,” Nuno said.

Awoniyi has faced several injury setbacks throughout the season, and this latest one comes at a crucial stage in Forest’s Premier League campaign.

While the club has not provided a timeline for his return, Nuno remains optimistic that the forward will recover and rejoin his teammates in due time.
