Nigerian community in Ivory Coast calls for unity to combat human trafficking

In response to the recent allegations of human trafficking involving Nigerian nationals in Ivory Coast, the Nigerian community leadership in the country has called for collaboration between the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and activist VeryDarkMan.

Their collective goal, they emphasize, should be the protection of vulnerable Nigerians, especially children.

The controversy erupted after a viral video by social media activist VeryDarkMan highlighted the plight of Nigerian girls reportedly trafficked to Ivory Coast.

The video, which mentioned NIDCOM and its Chairperson, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, sparked widespread concern across both the diaspora and Nigeria.

Mr. Onwuchelu Michael Emeka, the President of the Nigerian Community in Ivory Coast, issued a statement to clarify the community’s position, emphasizing that there was no intention to undermine the Nigerian government.

“Our meeting with VeryDarkMan was conducted in good faith, with a shared commitment to address the human trafficking issue that affects our people,” Emeka explained.

“We were unaware that it would generate such controversy. Our focus was always on finding solutions, not creating division.”

The community leader stressed that their objective is to promote collaboration rather than confrontation.

He stated, “We believe that both NIDCOM and activists like VeryDarkMan can work together in the best interests of our children. Advocacy and government efforts should align to have a meaningful impact.”

Emeka also expressed gratitude for the continued support of the Nigerian Embassy in Ivory Coast, highlighting Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s steadfast commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad.

“We commend NIDCOM and Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa for their proactive approach in supporting diaspora welfare. We also acknowledge the role of advocacy in shedding light on issues that need urgent attention. The priority now is to protect the victims and prevent future incidents,” Emeka added.

To foster stronger collaboration, the Nigerian community in Ivory Coast plans to initiate visits to key stakeholders in Nigeria, including NIDCOM, to align strategies for diaspora safety and engagement.

“We must work together for the safety of our people, especially our youth. Protecting Nigerians abroad is a shared responsibility,” Emeka concluded.

In related news, Air Peace CEO Dr. Allen Onyema pledged to evacuate the trafficked girls from Ivory Coast free of charge.

Meanwhile, VeryDarkMan announced a N20 million donation to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to support the return and rehabilitation of trafficked children.

He called on security agencies to play an active role in securing borders and protecting vulnerable children, particularly girls.
