The Nigerian government has confirmed that it will introduce a new electronic visa (e-Visa) system starting May 1, 2025.
This announcement was made in Abuja during a high-level meeting focused on immigration protocol enforcement, attended by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
The new e-Visa platform will allow applicants to apply for travel authorization entirely online. Travelers can submit the necessary documents, such as passports, and make payments through a web portal, eliminating the need to visit Nigerian embassies or consulates abroad.
Tunji-Ojo described the initiative as a major advancement in operational efficiency, noting that Nigeria’s immigration headquarters has already set up a centralized visa approval center. He added that immigration officers have undergone advanced training and now have integrated access to global criminal databases, including Interpol, to improve background checks.
The system aims to streamline the visa process, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, prevent extortion, and ensure smooth entry for legitimate visitors, all while maintaining national security.
To oversee the project’s implementation, a joint task force comprising officials from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will manage the rollout.
