NiDCOM investigates Nigerian’s five-year detention in South Africa

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has initiated an inquiry into the reported detention of a Nigerian citizen, Abdul Olatunji, who has allegedly been held in South Africa since 2019 without trial.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to investigating the circumstances of the case and ensuring justice.

Olatunji’s family has accused South African authorities of fabricating charges that led to his prolonged detention and has urged the Nigerian government to intervene urgently.

NiDCOM stated that once the matter came to its attention, it contacted the acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa. The High Commissioner has since engaged the South African government, demanding an explanation given the gravity of the allegations.

“This case was not previously reported to NiDCOM or the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa,” the statement said. “However, both entities are now fully involved, working to ensure a comprehensive investigation and a fair resolution.”

The Nigerian Women’s Association in South Africa has also expressed support, with plans to visit Olatunji in prison. Elizabeth Johnson, the association’s president, informed NiDCOM that the group had reached out to Olatunji following media reports about his situation and is coordinating a visit to his detention facility.

NiDCOM Chairman has personally spoken with Olatunji’s brother, further demonstrating the Commission’s dedication to the case.

The statement reiterated NiDCOM’s assurance that the Federal Government would take all necessary steps to investigate the allegations and secure justice for Olatunji.
