NiDCOM hails Mayor Katung’s induction into Nigerian women’s hall of fame

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has lauded the induction of Abigail Marshall Katung, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, into the Maryam Babangida Nigerian Women’s Hall of Fame, calling it a momentous achievement for the Nigerian diaspora community.

In a statement released by Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM’s Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit, Dabiri-Erewa expressed pride in the recognition, noting that it serves as a testament to NiDCOM’s belief in the influence and capabilities of Nigerians abroad.

She described Katung as an embodiment of the excellence, resilience, and leadership that NiDCOM values, highlighting her role as the first African-born Lord Mayor of Leeds as an inspiring milestone.

“This recognition is not just a tribute to Abigail Marshall Katung’s personal accomplishments, but also a celebration of Nigerian women in the diaspora who are making remarkable global impacts while preserving their strong cultural ties,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

She also reaffirmed NiDCOM’s dedication to honoring Nigerians worldwide who excel in their respective fields and contribute to the nation’s growth.

The NiDCOM CEO added, “This honor serves as a powerful reminder that home never forgets. We hope it will inspire more Nigerians in the diaspora to stay engaged, return, and invest in shaping the Nigeria we all aspire to see.”

In her response, Abigail Marshall Katung expressed deep gratitude for the honor, calling it a humbling recognition that reaffirms her connection to her Nigerian roots.

She praised NiDCOM and the Centre for Women Development for their efforts in showcasing the transformative work of Nigerian women globally and pledged her ongoing commitment to fostering stronger ties between Nigeria and its diaspora, particularly through empowering women and youth in leadership roles.

The Aisha Babangida Nigerian Women’s Hall of Fame, housed at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development in Abuja, honors exceptional Nigerian women—both at home and abroad—who have demonstrated remarkable leadership, service, and impact.
