NiDCOM cautions job seekers as Nigerian content moderator dies in Kenya

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called on Kenyan authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi, a Nigerian content moderator working in Nairobi.

Olubunmi, who was employed by Teleperformance Kenya, was found dead in her apartment on March 7, 2025.

Reports indicate that her body had already begun decomposing when it was discovered three days later.

Concerns have emerged regarding her working conditions, with some colleagues alleging that she was repeatedly denied leave, despite being entitled to an annual return ticket home.

There are also claims that many Nigerian employees in the company do not possess proper work permits, restricting their ability to travel freely.

Teleperformance Kenya, however, has dismissed these allegations as unfounded. Despite this, industry workers have raised broader concerns about poor wages, long working hours, and inadequate mental health support for content moderators employed by various tech firms.

In a statement signed by Gabriel Odu, NiDCOM stressed the need for stronger labor laws to protect Nigerians working abroad.

The commission’s chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, extended condolences to Olubunmi’s family and assured that the Nigerian High Commission in Kenya is closely following developments in the case.

She also advised Nigerian job seekers to carefully verify employment conditions before accepting jobs overseas. Meanwhile, NiDCOM has urged Nigerians in Kenya to remain calm as authorities investigate the tragic incident.
