Leeds United have confirmed a contract extension for talented young defender James Debayo following the club’s successful 2024–2025 campaign, which ended with them winning the EFL Championship.
As part of their official retained list submitted to the English Football League, the club offered fresh terms to several academy players, including the highly-rated 19-year-old centre-back of Nigerian descent.
Debayo, who was born in London, has enjoyed a breakout season, earning recognition for his progress and dedication.
He was named in 24 matchday squads throughout the season and made his senior league debut in Leeds’ thrilling 4-3 win over Swansea City on November 24.
He followed up with another appearance in February during an Emirates FA Cup tie against Millwall.
Known for his composure and defensive strength, Debayo has consistently trained with the first team and is seen as a future mainstay in the senior squad.
His development has also been evident through standout performances in the Premier League 2, Premier League Cup, and National League Cup, where he found the net in a March fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Leeds United initially secured Debayo’s services in 2021, fending off interest from top Premier League clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Brighton, and Southampton—a significant achievement in youth recruitment.
Football talent runs in Debayo’s family. He is the younger brother of Josh Debayo, who was once part of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets training squad ahead of the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the UAE.
With a new deal in place, James Debayo looks set to continue his upward trajectory as he aims to make a greater impact with Leeds United in the Premier League.
