Japa Journey: Leaving my family behind was tough, but I had to seek better life – UK-based Nigerian

In September 2023, I made the difficult decision to leave Nigeria for the United Kingdom.

The entire relocation process cost me over N25 million. It wasn’t an easy choice, but after years of frustration with the system back home, I needed new opportunities.

Despite working for more than 16 years in Nigeria, my monthly salary was only N250,000 — barely enough to meet my family’s needs.

New Beginnings

Starting over abroad was challenging, but it has been worth it. In the UK, the systems function efficiently, and with hard work, it’s possible to build a decent life.

To illustrate, my wife, who once earned just N30,000 monthly as a private school teacher in Nigeria, now makes about £400 per week (approximately N800,000).

Family Sacrifices

I have a family of four. Initially, I had to travel alone because I couldn’t afford to bring my wife and children with me at once. My wife joined me in 2024, and our children followed later that year. Leaving them behind was heartbreaking, but necessary under the circumstances.

Career Shift

Back in Nigeria, I worked in the media industry. Today, I’m a Customer Service Representative in the UK — a shift that has opened up new possibilities.

Life Abroad

My experience here has been largely positive. The only real adjustment has been dealing with the cold weather. Otherwise, the people are friendly, and the environment is welcoming.

Infrastructure is reliable — there’s constant electricity, an efficient transportation system, and excellent rail services. Security is strong, allowing you to move freely at any hour without fear. Education for children at the primary and secondary levels is also free.

Looking Ahead

At the moment, I have no plans to return to Nigeria. However, if the country sees meaningful reforms and improvement in governance, I might reconsider.

Helping Others

Relocating has been such a positive change for me that I’ve encouraged my friends to explore similar opportunities. If given the chance, I would gladly help others relocate too.
