Japa: Corruption pushing 60% of Nigerian, other African youths to migrate

A new poll released Tuesday reveals that 60% of African youth are considering emigration due to rampant corruption, which they view as the biggest barrier to achieving their potential and improving their lives. The survey, commissioned by the Johannesburg-based Ichikowitz Family Foundation, involved over 5,600 individuals aged 18 to 24 from 16 African countries.

The survey highlights widespread dissatisfaction with government efforts to combat corruption. Nearly 60% of respondents expressed a desire to leave their countries within the next five years. Conducted in January and February 2024, the survey spans nations from South Africa to Ethiopia.

North America is the preferred destination for those contemplating emigration, followed by Western European countries such as the UK, France, Germany, and Spain. Over half (55%) of respondents feel Africa is heading in the “wrong direction,” though optimism about the continent has slightly increased to 37% from the 2022 survey.

Respondents are calling for stricter sanctions against corrupt politicians, including bans on holding office. They also advocate for a reformed form of government, with about 60% supporting a uniquely African approach. Approximately one-third believe that non-democratic systems, such as military or one-party rule, could be preferable under certain conditions.

The survey also reveals concerns about foreign influence, with 72% of respondents worried about the exploitation of their countries’ natural resources by foreign companies. However, 82% view China’s influence positively, and 79% have a favorable view of the United States. Perceptions of Russian influence have also risen, particularly in Malawi and South Africa, where respondents appreciate Russia’s provision of grain and fertilizer.

Most participants believe a victory by Donald Trump in the upcoming US presidential elections would be detrimental to Africa compared to a win by Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

The African Youth Survey, first launched in 2020, aims to provide a scientific platform for young Africans to voice their concerns and offers valuable data for governments, NGOs, and investors. The median age in Africa was 19.7 in 2020, compared to 31.0 in Latin America, 38.6 in North America, and 42.5 in Europe. The African Development Bank reports that the continent is home to nearly 420 million youth aged 15-35, with one-third unemployed. This population is expected to exceed 830 million by 2050.

The 2024 survey was conducted by PSB Insights across Botswana, Cameroon, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.
