In London, Nigerian Artist blends contemporary with classical masterpieces

Ken Nwadiogbu, a Nigerian multidisciplinary artist known for his socially aware creations, recently made waves at the Saatchi Gallery in London during the Absolut x Warhol: The Other Half Showcase.

This UK exhibition highlighted his unique artistic vision and was a significant moment in his career.

The exhibition, curated by Hypebae and Absolut Vodka, featured five dynamic international artists. Alongside Nwadiogbu were Kelly Anna (illustrator), Jade Pearl (fashion designer and illustrator), Xu Yang (London-based artist), and Alexa Sirbu (co-founder of 3D design practice XK). Each artist brought their distinct perspective, contributing to a diverse display of talent.

Nwadiogbu’s work draws inspiration from Andy Warhol’s iconic Absolut ‘blue,’ a piece rediscovered in 2020 that traces its roots back to the Absolut Art campaign of 1985. Paying homage to Warhol’s legacy, Nwadiogbu reinterprets the theme through a contemporary lens. His exhibited pieces, primarily oil and acrylic on canvas, included notable works like Time Away (210 x 120 cm), Fly on, Ride Through (150 x 120 cm), and Speak Less, See More (40 x 40 cm). An exception in the collection was Red Migrant, an acrylic on cardboard piece.

The artist’s innovative use of a thermal-graphic-inspired color palette offers a fresh take on Warhol’s style, showcasing Nwadiogbu’s unique artistic approach. Having earned a Master’s degree in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London, Nwadiogbu continues to elevate his global standing with a profound artistic vision rooted in the socio-political realities affecting the Black community.

Addressing themes like migration, identity, and political control, Nwadiogbu’s art combines cerebral elements with a clear social message. His participation in this exhibition marks a significant milestone in his career.

Reflecting on the experience, Ken Nwadiogbu shared: “The exhibition was a truly special experience. Collaborating with Absolut, a brand that’s worked with legends like Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Keith Haring, and having my work shown at the Saatchi Gallery felt like a major win. As a Nigerian, it gave me the perfect platform to tell my own story and share my perspective.”

This exhibition marks Nwadiogbu’s second collaboration with a Pernod Ricard brand. In 2022, he created The Blue Experience, a digital film for Martell. His recent work with Absolut solidifies his reputation as a rising star in the art world, adding to a portfolio that includes collaborations with Netflix, GANT, and Martell.

Ken Nwadiogbu’s art has been showcased at several prestigious venues, including the Royal Academy of Art, Somerset House, and the Bishop Museum, further cementing his status as a global figure in contemporary art.
