Oluwaseun Adepoju is a Rwandan-based Nigerian and the Managing Partner at Co-creation Hub (CcHUB), a renowned innovation center dedicated to harnessing social capital and technology for economic advancement. As a digital expert and prominent figure in Africa’s technology landscape for over a decade, Adepoju has played a pivotal role in shaping technology policy and entrepreneurial innovation across the continent. He has received accolades for his remarkable contributions to African technology advocacy and was selected for inclusion in the German Corporation/MakeITAfrica 2018 technology trend-scouting as one of the leading technology advocates in Africa.
Adepoju has previously held positions such as Head of Research at the Africa Blockchain Institute, faculty member at the African Leadership University, Rwanda, Chief Technology Officer at TechMIT Africa, and Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Ibadan.
Adepoju is a PhD scholar in Creative Technologies from Auckland University of Technology, a master’s degree in public policy/technology from the Korean Development Institute of Public Policy and Management in South Korea, a master’s degree in information science from the University of Ibadan, and a first-class degree in Library and Information Science.
In this exclusive interview, Adepoju shares insights into his work, and experiences of living in Rwanda, and offers valuable advice to young people striving to make a difference. Excerpts:
What are some of the biggest adjustments you’ve had to make living in Rwanda compared to Nigeria? How has your experience shaped your perspective on development in Africa?
Living in Rwanda has been a fascinating experience, especially coming from Nigeria. One of the most noticeable adjustments I’ve had to make is navigating the cultural differences. Rwanda’s cultural landscape is distinct, with its language, traditions, and social norms. Adapting to these differences has required both time and effort, but it’s been an enriching journey of learning and growth.
Another aspect that stands out is the governance and infrastructure. Rwanda has made remarkable strides in these areas in recent years. The efficiency and organization of the government and the development of infrastructure are quite impressive compared to the challenges Nigeria faces in these areas. It’s been eye-opening to witness the impact of strong governance and well-planned infrastructure on the overall functioning of society.
The economic environment in Rwanda is also quite different from what I was accustomed to in Nigeria. Here, there’s a strong emphasis on sectors such as tourism, technology, and agriculture. It’s interesting to see how these sectors drive the economy and contribute to the country’s development agenda.
One aspect of Rwandan society that has left a profound impression on me is its social cohesion. Despite the tragic history of the 1994 genocide, Rwanda has undergone a remarkable process of reconciliation and social cohesion. This has shaped my perspective on community relations and conflict resolution, highlighting the importance of healing and unity in building a peaceful society.
Overall, my experience in Rwanda has broadened my understanding of African development. It has taught me the importance of cultural sensitivity, good governance, economic diversification, and social cohesion in driving sustainable development.
Can you describe the Nigerian diaspora community in Rwanda? Are there any unique challenges or opportunities they face compared to other Nigerian diaspora communities you’ve encountered?
The Nigerian diaspora community in Rwanda is a diverse group, much like diaspora communities found elsewhere around the world. It’s made up of individuals and families who’ve made the journey from Nigeria to Rwanda for a variety of reasons – whether it’s pursuing education, seeking employment opportunities, exploring business ventures, or simply following personal aspirations. Within this community, you’ll find a mix of professionals, students, entrepreneurs, and others, all striving to build their lives and make meaningful contributions to the development of both Nigeria and Rwanda.
Of course, this transition isn’t without its challenges. Cultural adjustment, for instance, can be quite daunting. Bridging the gap between the traditions, language, and social norms of Nigeria and those of Rwanda requires patience and understanding. Building social connections in a new environment also takes time, especially when faced with language barriers or limited opportunities for interaction with the local population. And navigating unfamiliar systems for accessing essential services like healthcare, education, and legal assistance can pose significant hurdles.
Finding employment or establishing successful businesses in Rwanda may present additional challenges, particularly when dealing with differences in job markets, qualifications recognition, or regulatory requirements between the two countries. Yet, amidst these challenges lie unique opportunities for the Nigerian diaspora community in Rwanda. Diaspora networks often serve as invaluable platforms for networking, collaboration, and mutual support – crucial elements for fostering social and professional integration in a new country. Moreover, interacting with Rwandan locals and other diaspora groups enriches cultural experiences, fostering greater understanding and appreciation of diversity.
In the grand scheme of things, while living abroad presents its fair share of obstacles, it also presents boundless opportunities – not just for personal growth and development, but also for making meaningful contributions to both the host and home countries. Your career in technology spans various areas including research for development and technology policy. How do you see technology contributing to development in Africa?
As someone deeply invested in the intersection of technology and development, I am keenly aware of the immense potential that technology holds for driving progress in Africa. Across various sectors, from education to healthcare, agriculture to governance, technology has the power to revolutionize the way we approach development challenges and unlock new opportunities for growth and prosperity.
One of the most impactful ways technology can contribute to development in Africa is by improving access to information and education. Through digital platforms and online resources, individuals can access a wealth of educational materials and learning opportunities, regardless of their location. Whether it’s through online courses, educational apps, or e-libraries, technology is breaking down barriers to education and empowering people with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.
Technology-based entrepreneurship and innovation play a crucial role in stimulating economic growth and creating job opportunities across the continent. Startups and small businesses leveraging technology are driving innovation, creating new markets, and generating employment, particularly among youth and women. From fintech to e-commerce, technology-driven enterprises are reshaping Africa’s economic landscape and fueling entrepreneurship and innovation.
Financial inclusion is another area where technology is making a significant impact. Digital financial services and mobile money platforms are expanding access to financial services for millions of underserved individuals and businesses in Africa. By providing access to savings, credit, insurance, and other financial products, technology promotes financial inclusion, empowering people to build assets, manage risks, and improve their livelihoods.
In the realm of healthcare, technology has the potential to revolutionize access to healthcare services and improve health outcomes across Africa. Telemedicine, mobile health applications, and electronic health records are enabling people to access healthcare services remotely, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Technology-driven solutions are facilitating early diagnosis, improving treatment outcomes, and strengthening health systems, ultimately saving lives, and improving well-being.
In agriculture, technology is driving innovation and increasing productivity for smallholder farmers across Africa. From precision farming to mobile-based agricultural advisory services, technology is enabling farmers to make informed decisions, access markets, and adopt sustainable farming practices. By improving agricultural productivity and enhancing food security, technology is helping to alleviate poverty and hunger in rural communities.
Technology is accelerating infrastructure development in Africa, particularly in areas such as energy, transportation, and communication. Smart infrastructure solutions, renewable energy technologies, and digital connectivity initiatives are enhancing efficiency, promoting sustainability, and driving inclusive growth across the continent.
Technology is revolutionizing governance and public service delivery in Africa. Digital governance tools, open data platforms, and e-government services are enhancing transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement in governance processes. By improving public service delivery, reducing corruption, and promoting citizen participation, technology is strengthening democratic governance and promoting social inclusion.
Technology has the potential to catalyze inclusive and sustainable development in Africa by addressing key challenges, unlocking opportunities, and empowering individuals and communities to thrive in the digital age. However, realizing this potential requires concerted efforts from governments, private sector stakeholders, civil society organizations, and the international community to harness technology effectively and ensure that its benefits are equitably distributed across society. As someone passionate about technology and development, I am committed to working towards harnessing the power of technology for positive change in Africa and beyond.
Diaspora engagement is increasingly recognized as vital for development in many African countries. How do you personally engage with the Nigerian diaspora community, and what opportunities do you see for leveraging diaspora expertise and resources for development?
Engaging with the Nigerian diaspora community is something I personally find incredibly important and rewarding. There’s a wealth of knowledge, skills, and resources within the diaspora that can be harnessed for the development of Nigeria. To engage with the diaspora community and the opportunities I see for leveraging their expertise and resources, I make it a point to attend diaspora events, conferences, and networking gatherings whenever possible. These events provide valuable opportunities to connect with fellow Nigerians living abroad, exchange ideas, and build relationships. Networking within the diaspora community allows me to tap into diverse perspectives and experiences, fostering collaboration and mutual support.
Volunteering and mentorship are also keyways I engage with the diaspora. Offering my time and expertise to support diaspora members, particularly newcomers or those seeking to make a positive impact in Nigeria, is incredibly fulfilling. Whether it’s providing guidance on career opportunities, sharing insights into navigating cultural differences, or offering support with personal development, mentorship can make a meaningful difference in the lives of diaspora members.
Additionally, I actively participate in knowledge sharing and capacity building initiatives. Whether through workshops, seminars, or online platforms, sharing knowledge, expertise, and best practices empowers diaspora members with the skills and resources needed to contribute effectively to development efforts in Nigeria. By facilitating learning and skill development, we can unlock the potential of the diaspora to drive positive change.
When it comes to leveraging diaspora expertise and resources for development, the opportunities are vast. Remittances from the diaspora play a significant role in supporting household incomes, funding education, healthcare, and small-scale businesses, and contributing to overall economic development. Diaspora members also possess valuable skills, expertise, and knowledge that can be transferred to local communities through training programs, workshops, and capacity-building initiatives.
Entrepreneurship and innovation are areas where the diaspora can make a significant impact. Diaspora entrepreneurs can drive innovation and create new business opportunities in Nigeria, particularly in sectors such as technology, healthcare, agriculture, and renewable energy. By investing in diaspora-led businesses or supporting entrepreneurship initiatives, we can spur economic growth, create jobs, and drive innovation.
Advocacy and networking are also essential components of diaspora engagement for development. Diaspora organizations and networks can advocate for diaspora-friendly policies, facilitate collaboration between diaspora and local stakeholders, and mobilize resources and support for development projects. By amplifying the voices of the diaspora and advocating for policies that promote diaspora engagement, we can create an enabling environment for diaspora contributions to thrive.
What are some of the biggest cultural or professional differences you’ve encountered working in the tech sector across different African countries? How have you adapted to these differences? What advice would you give to other young Africans aspiring to make an impact in the tech industry?
In my experience working across different African countries in the tech sector, I’ve encountered various cultural and professional differences. These include workplace dynamics, regulatory environments, access to resources, and cultural norms. To adapt, I’ve focused on cultural awareness, flexibility, relationship-building, and continuous learning. For young Africans aspiring to make an impact in tech, I advise investing in skills, embracing entrepreneurship, building networks, staying resilient, and giving back to the community. Success in the tech industry requires a combination of technical skills, cultural intelligence, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning and innovation. By embracing these principles, young Africans can play a significant role in shaping the future of technology in Africa.
Your career path has taken you from librarian to tech leader. What advice would you give to young Africans interested in developing adaptable and diverse career paths?
My career journey has been quite unconventional, transitioning from a librarian to a tech leader. Along the way, I’ve learned a few valuable lessons that I’d like to share with young Africans interested in developing adaptable and diverse career paths.
First, embrace lifelong learning. Keep an open mind and be willing to acquire new skills and explore different opportunities throughout your career. The world constantly evolves and staying relevant means continuously upgrading your skillset.
Follow your passions. Don’t be afraid to pursue what truly excites you, even if it leads you down unexpected paths. Your diverse interests can enrich your career journey and open doors to new possibilities.
Stay flexible and open-minded. Your career path might not unfold exactly as you envisioned, and that’s okay. Be willing to pivot, explore different industries, and seize opportunities that come your way.
Seek mentorship and guidance. Surround yourself with mentors who can offer valuable advice and perspective based on their own experiences. Learn from their successes and failures and use their guidance to navigate your own career path.

Despite the growth of startups, some argue the Nigerian tech scene lacks impactful solutions. What are your thoughts on this critique? How can we ensure tech innovation translates to real-world benefits for Nigerians?
In assessing the critique that the Nigerian tech scene lacks impactful solutions despite its growth, I find merit in the argument. While there’s been substantial progress in the number of startups and technological innovations, the real challenge lies in ensuring these developments translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.
To address this, I believe we need to refocus our efforts on problem-solving. Tech startups should prioritize identifying and addressing the most pressing challenges faced by Nigerians, such as healthcare access, education quality, financial inclusion, agriculture productivity, and infrastructure development.
User-centric design is also critical. Involving end-users in the design process ensures that solutions are tailored to their needs and preferences. By prioritizing accessibility and affordability, we can ensure that tech solutions reach a wide range of users, including those in rural and underserved areas.
Collaboration and partnerships are key to amplifying the impact of tech innovations. By working together with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders, we can leverage our collective strengths and resources to address complex challenges more effectively.
Investing in the capacity building and skill development of local talent is crucial for driving tech innovation and adoption in Nigeria. By providing training and mentorship opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs, developers, and tech professionals, we can cultivate a thriving ecosystem of innovation.
A supportive regulatory environment is also essential. Government policies and regulations should encourage entrepreneurship, promote innovation, and provide incentives for tech startups to thrive.
Ultimately, measuring and evaluating the impact of tech solutions is crucial. By tracking key performance indicators, conducting user feedback surveys, and analyzing outcomes over time, we can ensure that our efforts are effectively addressing the intended problems and delivering real-world benefits.
