Mr. Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party (LP) candidate for Governor of Edo State, has pledged to implement targeted measures to combat flooding in the state, particularly in the capital, Benin City, if elected.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in the United States with members of the Edo Diaspora, Akpata emphasized the critical role of diaspora engagement in the state’s progress. He assured that his administration would foster a collaborative relationship with the diaspora to drive development and prosperity.
Leveraging Diaspora Potential
Akpata stated, “Edo State will undoubtedly advance if we harness the potential within our diaspora community. Our people, wherever they are, possess immense skills and resources. During my campaigns, I’ve consistently heard from people about our plans, and I believe that our state needs the diaspora more than they need us. With the Diaspora Commission Law already in place, my government will ensure its effective implementation to foster closer cooperation between the state and our diaspora.”
Campaign Efforts
Akpata highlighted his extensive campaign efforts, noting that he and his deputy governorship candidate have extensively toured the state, visiting all 18 local government areas. He remarked on the poor condition of the roads, contrasting his approach with that of the current governor, who often uses helicopters. “I chose to experience firsthand the conditions our people endure,” Akpata said. “Despite the challenges, we received a warm reception and valuable feedback from the communities.”
Addressing Flooding
Akpata expressed concern over the persistent flooding issues in Edo State, particularly in Benin City and the Government Reservation Area (GRA). He pointed out that inadequate drainage systems exacerbate the problem, making areas like Ugbor and the service lane near Uselu Market prone to severe flooding.
“Flooding is a significant challenge in Edo State,” Akpata noted. “It’s as though it’s an inevitable occurrence at certain times of the year. For instance, after JBS Estate in the GRA, the area turns into a river. Delta State faced similar issues, but Governor Okowa’s stormwater project addressed them effectively. Unfortunately, there has been no comparable effort in Benin City.”
Akpata outlined his plans to tackle flooding by improving drainage infrastructure, enforcing sanitation regulations, and engaging experts to find sustainable solutions. “We need a comprehensive approach that includes proper drainage systems, public awareness, and strict enforcement to address this issue effectively,” he concluded.
