Carolyna Hutchings opens up about experiencing racism in Nigeria

Scottish-Nigerian actress Carolyna Hutchings has shared her personal experience with racism while growing up in Nigeria as a mixed-race child.

In a recent interview with Arise TV, Hutchings revealed that she endured bullying and racial discrimination throughout her primary and secondary school years, mainly due to her skin color and hair texture.

The actress also spoke about facing racism in the workplace, despite her impressive academic achievements, including an MBA, MSA in international law, and a Doctorate.

She discussed how being a beautiful mixed-race woman, especially as a divorcee, often led to societal criticism and stigma.

However, Hutchings emphasized that she has grown resilient and learned to overcome these challenges.

“As a mixed-race person raised by my grandmother in Nigeria, I experienced a lot of racism. My skin color and hair texture were constant sources of bullying, from primary school through to secondary school. I had to learn how to defend myself,” she explained.

“Even in my professional life, I faced discrimination. Despite having an MBA, an MSA in international law, a Doctorate, and various other certifications from respected institutions like Lagos Business School and Unilag, I was still criticized. As a mixed-race woman, I went through this. I also faced stigma for being a divorcee. But I’ve built a thick skin over the years.”
