Canada appoints Nigerian-Born Emem Madu as Judge

Emem Madu, a Nigerian-born Canadian, has been appointed as a Judge of the Alberta Court of Justice in Canada.

Madu, an alumna of the University of Lagos, Nigeria, will serve in the Edmonton Family and Youth Division, with her appointment taking effect on January 31, 2025.

The announcement was made on January 15, 2025, by Justice Minister Mickey Amery, who introduced three new Provincial Judges, including Madu. Nigerian jurist and fellow alumnus, Professor Gideon Christian, shared the news of her appointment on social media last Thursday.

Madu holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Lagos, which she earned in 2002, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2003. She later pursued a Master of Laws degree at the University of Alberta, graduating in 2007.

Throughout her career, Madu has held several notable positions, including Regulatory Compliance Specialist at ATB Financial, Policy and Legislation Analyst at Alberta Justice, and Research Lawyer at Brownlee LLP in Edmonton.
