BREAKING: Pope Francis passes away at 88

Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church and a respected global figure known for his humility and commitment to social justice, has died at the age of 88.

The Vatican announced his passing on the morning of Monday, April 21, 2025. According to Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the camerlengo of the Holy See, the pope died peacefully at 7:35 a.m. in his Vatican City residence.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he made history in 2013 by becoming the first Jesuit to assume the papacy, the first pope from the Americas, and the first non-European in over a thousand years to hold the position.

During his 12 years as pope, Francis became known for his progressive outlook, vocal support for the poor and disadvantaged, and his strong emphasis on climate change and interfaith unity.

Despite facing opposition from traditionalists within the Church, he remained focused on renewing the Church’s connection with ordinary people while upholding its spiritual essence.

His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from leaders, religious communities, and millions of Catholics around the world who are honoring his impactful legacy.

Arrangements are currently being made for his funeral, and preparations for the conclave to choose the next pope are underway.
