Homecoming for trade: Nigerian-born UK Minister, Badenoch, visits, strengthens business ties

Kemi Badenoch, Nigerian-born UK Minister for Business and Trade, has embarked on a three-day visit to Nigeria, aiming to forge deeper partnerships and unlock new investment opportunities between the two nations.

This visit builds upon previous engagements, including the Foreign Secretary’s visit in August 2023 and the UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Talks held last week.

Accompanied by Helen Grant, the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Nigeria, Badenoch’s schedule includes high-level meetings with the Federal Government, state governors, and key players in the Nigerian and British business communities. This comprehensive approach underscores the UK’s commitment to fostering collaborative ties across various sectors.

Highlighting the potential for growth in Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner, commended recent reforms undertaken by the Nigerian government. He expressed optimism that these reforms are fostering a favourable environment for international investment, creating a win-win situation for both nations.

“Nigeria is a crucial partner for the UK in Africa,” stated Dr. Montgomery. “We are firmly committed to assisting Nigeria in unlocking new investment prospects, channeling more UK and international investment through the City of London, and ultimately generating jobs in both countries.”

Badenoch’s meetings will delve into existing and potential investment and trade endeavours, spanning diverse areas like education, infrastructure, and energy projects. These strategic collaborations hold the potential to create thousands of jobs and inject significant economic growth into both nations.

This visit signifies the UK’s continued commitment to strengthening its relationship with Nigeria. By fostering mutually beneficial partnerships and unlocking investment opportunities, both countries can embark on a shared path towards economic prosperity and sustainable development.
