What I have learnt living in Qatar – Dolapo Alaka

Dolapo Alaka, a Physics graduate from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, has carved a successful path in the tech industry abroad. Now a seasoned Microsoft Azure Database Administrator with extensive experience managing complex databases, Alaka holds a senior position at a leading Qatari corporation. In this interview with allnaijadiaspora, Alaka, a current postgraduate scholar in Big Data at the University of Stirling, shares his experiences working in Qatar and offers valuable insights for Nigerians considering similar opportunities. Excerpts:

Could you please share your journey as a Nigerian residing in Qatar? What prompted your decision to move, and how has the transition unfolded for you?

In a pivotal moment of my life, I recognized the need to advance my career by relocating to a technologically advanced country to gain extensive experience in my field as a Database Administrator. However, the financial means to make such a move, including support for my family, were not readily available. Determined to pursue this goal, I began actively seeking opportunities abroad, primarily through professional networking platforms like LinkedIn. Despite applying to numerous positions and attending several interviews, success seemed elusive.

Undeterred, I persisted in showcasing my skills and expertise on LinkedIn, sharing my projects and pursuing relevant certifications. Then, one day, a connection reached out to inquire about my availability for a potential job opportunity and requested my CV to pass along to a colleague. Eagerly, I accepted the offer. Following an interview process, I am grateful to say that I now find myself in Doha, Qatar, alongside my family, employed as a Senior Database Administrator at a leading bank.

Many Nigerians are curious about job opportunities in Qatar. Could you describe the employment landscape for expatriates, particularly Nigerians, in the country?

Qatar is a technology-driven hub, offering numerous job opportunities tailored to Nigerian professionals. Securing a position directly from Nigeria is often the best route, as many Nigerians find themselves in Qatar without formal employment. Nevertheless, there persists a trend of individuals reaching out to connections back home, seeking sponsorship for relocation to Qatar. Particularly within the IT sector, there exists a favorable likelihood of securing employment.

Qatar is known for its high standard of living. From your perspective, what aspects of daily life in Qatar stand out compared to Nigeria?

In Qatar, one notable advantage is that your entire salary is yours to keep, with no deductions for taxes. The cost of living is reasonable, particularly concerning food expenses. However, housing rent tends to be relatively high and is typically paid every month. Additionally, Qatar boasts excellent security measures, a stable economy, and an uninterrupted power supply, which contrasts with the occasional power outages experienced in Nigeria. Moreover, the price of fuel, particularly petrol (PMS), remains affordable and remains consistent over time.

As a foreigner, what challenges have you encountered while living in Qatar, and how have you overcome them?

Securing accommodation proved to be my initial challenge. However, I managed to find suitable housing by reaching out to the Church community (RCCG Qatar). Access to accurate information was crucial. Qatar has strict regulations and violating them can result in fines. Yet, through interactions with fellow church members and participation in Nigerian diaspora WhatsApp groups, I gained valuable insights into the rules and regulations. Additionally, organizations like NIDO Qatar (Nigerians in Diaspora Organization) serve as invaluable resources. With approachable executive members and regular updates shared on dedicated WhatsApp groups, staying informed became more manageable.

Qatar is renowned for its cultural diversity. How have you found the experience of integrating into Qatari society and connecting with other expatriates?

One of the remarkable aspects of Qatar is its profound respect for diverse cultures and traditions. Contrary to misconceptions about strictness, the Qatari people exhibit remarkable flexibility and warmth. English serves as a common language, facilitating easy communication and interaction among expatriates. Moreover, Qatar fosters a culture of equality, irrespective of one’s race or background. The provision of religious centers enables individuals to practice their faith freely. Notably, Qatar’s unique workweek, with Sunday as the first working day and Friday and Saturday designated as weekends, further reflects its inclusive approach to accommodating diverse lifestyles.

Education is a priority for many Nigerian families. How would you rate the quality of education available for expatriate children in Qatar?

The educational landscape in Qatar poses some challenges, particularly concerning primary and secondary education. Variations in curricula and teaching methods compared to those in Nigeria can present obstacles for expatriate children. However, there’s a growing initiative within the Nigerian community in Qatar to establish schools tailored to the Nigerian curriculum, mirroring efforts by other nationalities. It’s worth noting that education in Qatar can be costly, spanning from kindergarten through secondary levels.

Qatar has made significant investments in infrastructure and development. How do you perceive the country’s progress and opportunities for growth, particularly in your field?

Yes, they invest in the latest technology and infrastructure. This dedication not only enhances the nation’s capabilities but also attracts numerous companies seeking to leverage such advancements. As a result, there’s a growing demand for skilled professionals, particularly in my field, creating ample opportunities for growth and development.

What advice would you offer to Nigerians considering relocating to Qatar for work or other opportunities?

Qatar is a very good Country to reside in. For Nigerians contemplating a move to Qatar for work or other opportunities, I would strongly advise ensuring you possess a valuable skillset before leaping. While Qatar offers an enticing environment with its zero-tax policy, security, and scenic surroundings, it’s essential to be prepared. Ideally, secure a job offer directly from Nigeria rather than arriving in Qatar without concrete employment prospects. Additionally, exercise caution when dealing with travel agents facilitating your relocation. Unfortunately, some individuals have found themselves stranded in Qatar due to unfulfilled promises made by agents back in Nigeria. So, research thoroughly, verify all arrangements, and prioritize legitimate pathways for a smoother transition.

Health care is a crucial aspect of expatriate life. How accessible and reliable have you found medical services in Qatar?

Accessing medical services in Qatar has been a reassuring experience for me as an expatriate. The country provides free healthcare for its residents, which is of exceptional quality. Medical services are readily accessible, with emergency responses available round the clock. Simply dialing the emergency number 999 ensures prompt assistance whenever needed.

What do you miss most about Nigeria, and are there any aspects of Qatari culture or lifestyle that you’ve come to appreciate and embrace during your time here?

Ultimately, what I miss most about Nigeria are my friends and family. However, Qatar’s developed infrastructure and amenities have made it easier for me to adjust. The consistent power supply, reliable water access, excellent security, well-maintained roads, and captivating environment are features that make it challenging to long for Nigeria. Additionally, Qatar’s tax-free system, stable policies, consistent fuel prices, and affordable food contribute to the overall quality of life here.
