US father charged as son kills schoolmates, teachers

Colin Gray, 54, the father of a 14-year-old boy charged with fatally shooting four people at Apalachee High School in Georgia, was arrested on Thursday. Gray faces serious charges, including second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children, for allegedly permitting his son, Colt Gray, to possess a weapon that contributed to the tragic incident.

This case underscores a growing trend of holding parents accountable for their children’s involvement in school shootings. In April, Jennifer and James Crumbley were the first parents in the U.S. to be convicted in connection with a school shooting. They were sentenced to at least 10 years in prison for failing to secure a firearm and ignoring warning signs related to their son’s mental health, which led to him killing four students in 2021.

According to Chris Hosey, Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Colin Gray faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. These charges are related to his actions and permissive attitude toward weapon possession.

In Georgia, second-degree murder involves causing another person’s death while committing cruelty to children and carries a prison sentence of 10 to 30 years. Involuntary manslaughter refers to an unintentional killing.

Colt Gray, charged as an adult, faces four counts of murder for the shooting at Apalachee High School on Wednesday. He allegedly used a semiautomatic rifle in the attack, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, and injuring nine others, seven of whom were shot.

Earlier in 2023, authorities investigated Colt Gray for a threatening social media post. Although the sheriff’s report indicated inconsistencies in the evidence, no charges were filed.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum stated that there was insufficient basis for charges at that time and that all appropriate actions had been taken.

Colin Gray had previously mentioned that his son struggled with their separation and bullying at school. He also noted that Colt frequently handled firearms and went hunting with him, claiming he was aware of the seriousness of weaponry.

The incident at Apalachee High School, where classes were canceled on Thursday, is the 30th mass killing in the U.S. in 2024. The nine hospitalized individuals, including eight students and one teacher, are expected to survive.

The community mourns the loss of Richard Aspinwall, a respected coach and mentor, while authorities continue to investigate how the suspect obtained the firearm and accessed the school.

This tragic event intensifies ongoing debates about gun control and school safety, highlighting the complexities faced by law enforcement in preventing and addressing such violence.
