A member of the United States Congress, Danny Davis, has called on President Bola Tinubu to establish a Nigerian consulate in Chicago, Illinois, to serve the growing Nigerian diaspora in the Midwest.
Davis, who represents Illinois’ 7th District, stated that the move would not only provide essential consular services but also strengthen diplomatic, trade, and cultural ties between Nigeria and the United States.
In a letter dated March 17, 2025, Davis highlighted the strategic importance of Chicago, noting that a consulate there would make services more accessible to Nigerians living in states like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa.
“Nigeria holds a significant position on the African continent, both economically and culturally, and has deep-rooted ties with the United States. Establishing a consulate in Chicago would enhance these bonds, boost diplomatic relations, and create new opportunities for trade, investment, and cultural exchange,” he wrote.
He further stressed that the large Nigerian diaspora in the Midwest deserves better access to passport renewal, visa applications, and other essential consular services.
Backing the call, General Coordinator of the Nigeria Diaspora Initiative (NDI), Tunji Quadri, emphasized that a consulate in Chicago would facilitate business, tourism, and investment opportunities between both nations.
Similarly, Professor Shaffideen Amuwo of the University of Illinois Chicago described the push for a consulate as a patriotic effort to improve Nigeria’s global engagement.
Aviation expert Tolani Banire also noted that the proposed office would strengthen government presence abroad and improve citizen-government interactions.
Davis assured his support in making the consulate a reality, urging Tinubu’s administration to prioritize the initiative to better serve Nigerians in the United States.
