Queens University Belfast, a prestigious institution based in the United Kingdom, has introduced a four-week Summer School scholarship program for undergraduates from Nigeria and other African countries.
The scholarship aims to offer students a chance to experience both academic and cultural learning while easing their financial burdens. It is designed to help students pursue their studies while broadening their knowledge.
Ranked among the top 200 universities globally, Queen’s University welcomed its first cohort of African scholars, with three Nigerian students earning the scholarship.
The recipients are Ahmad Attahir from Nile University Abuja (Computer Science), Adedife Adigun from Osun State University (English & International Business), and Anuoluwapo Olukayode from Bowen University (Computer Science).
The scholarship covers a wide range of benefits, including tuition, course materials, field trips, a Queen’s Sport Off-Peak membership, a certificate/transcript, a Queen’s University hoodie, and a 20% discount on the first year of a future MSc program.
Additionally, the scholarship provides £1,400 towards tuition, £1,300 for accommodation, a 20% discount for future Master’s studies, a course certificate, a transcript, academic reference letters, and assistance with securing a UK visa and travel arrangements.
Dr. Ilesanmi Olade, a Nigerian lecturer at the university, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating that African students deserve access to education at a university that promotes diversity.
He recalled raising concerns when noticing the absence of African students in the Summer School, leading to his advocacy for a scholarship to ensure African students could participate in the program.
