On Wednesday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reached out to President Bola Tinubu, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
During the call, President Tinubu congratulated Starmer on his recent election victory, while Starmer praised Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy.
The conversation focused on the significance of the UK-Nigeria relationship, which is founded on trade, security cooperation, and Commonwealth ties. Both leaders expressed a desire to enhance and fortify this partnership.
“The leaders viewed this as a chance to reset and strengthen our relationship, aiming to boost economic growth and prosperity between our countries, notably through the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership,” the statement read.
Starmer, who succeeded Rishi Sunak after leading the Labour Party to victory in the recent general election, is keen to build on these longstanding connections.
