The UK’s Metropolitan Police Service has dismissed Nigerian-British officer Shola Balogun, stationed at Bromley Police Station, following allegations that he bit a fellow officer during a birthday party in Bexleyheath, Kent.
The incident, which occurred at a 40th birthday party on April 22, 2022, was reviewed in a hearing from October 21-23, 2024.
The panel was chaired by Christopher McKay and included IPM Amanda Harvey and Detective Superintendent Kirsty Mead.
The hearing documents revealed that Balogun and the alleged victim, both officers stationed at Bromley Police Station since 2018, attended the party with approximately 70 others at Goals Sports Bar.
According to the victim, around 11:30 p.m., Balogun allegedly removed his glasses, pushed him, and then bit him on the face during a heated exchange.
Balogun denied the accusations, stating he only accidentally knocked off the glasses and did not engage in any assault. However, medical reports confirmed evidence of a bite.
The hearing notice stated, “The Regulation 30 Notice alleges that by acting in the way described, PC Balogun brought discredit to the police service and undermined public trust in the Metropolitan Police Service.”
It further emphasized that such behavior breaches the College of Policing’s Code of Ethics, which mandates that officers maintain high standards on and off duty.
Although Balogun’s colleagues, including a long-time line manager, spoke highly of his character and professional qualities, the panel considered his disciplinary history as part of their decision.
Citing the need to uphold public confidence, the panel determined that dismissal without notice was warranted.
