UK issues warning to British citizens over nationwide strike in Nigeria

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has released a travel advisory for citizens planning to visit Nigeria due to the current strike action in the country.

In the advisory, the FCDO urged British citizens to verify travel arrangements with their airline or agent before departure, as both local and international airports across Nigeria were closed on Monday.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have commenced a nationwide strike affecting public services across Nigeria,” the FCDO advisory said. “This includes disruptions at all Nigerian airports, including international terminals,” it added.

“You are advised to check with your airline or agent before travelling and make alternative arrangements where required.”

Economic activities, including airports and national grid, were shut down on Monday as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) commenced an indefinite strike after failure to reach an agreement with the federal government over a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Meanwhile, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, alongside other government officials, are currently in an closed door emergency meeting with the leadership of both NLC and TUC regarding the ongoing strike as at the time of filing this report.
