UK Embassy responds to concerns over stricter visa rules for Nigerians

Following recent reports suggesting the United Kingdom may impose tougher visa restrictions, the British High Commission in Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging lawful migration and curbing immigration abuses.

In a statement released on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Commission explained that the UK routinely reviews its immigration policies to streamline legitimate travel and prevent misuse of its visa system.

“We remain dedicated to maintaining strong ties with Nigeria and continue to collaborate with the Nigerian government in addressing issues related to irregular migration,” the spokesperson added.

The clarification comes after The Times reported that the UK government may be considering tighter visa controls for countries like Nigeria, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, citing high numbers of visa overstayers and asylum claims.

The UK Home Office is reportedly focused on reducing immigration violations, particularly by targeting countries with elevated rates of visa overstays.

In recent years, Nigerian applicants have encountered tougher regulations, including limitations on dependent visas and reduced post-study work options. These changes have led to a noticeable drop in the number of Nigerian students choosing the UK for higher education, with many now exploring alternatives like the United States, despite its own strict visa processes.

Figures from 2024 show a sharp rise in visa rejections for Nigerians—from 1 in 31 in 2022 to 1 in 8 by the end of 2023. Consequently, UK visa approvals for Nigerian nationals have fallen by 63% in the past year.
