British-Nigerian gospel musician Muyiwa Olarewaju has opened up about a distressing experience where he was mistaken for a suspect after being attacked.
In a video posted on his Twitter account, Muyiwa shared that earlier this year, around 5:30 a.m. while heading to work, a young white man tried to rob him by attempting to break into his car and shattering its window.
“I pointed the police to the location of the surveillance cameras,” he said, “and told them how the man broke my window and the anxiety it caused.”
After escaping the scene and getting to work safely, Muyiwa said he reported the matter to the police, hoping for justice. But to his shock, the response he received was far from what he expected.
“Not long after I contacted the police, they turned the situation around and began investigating me as a suspect,” he said. “Yes, me—the victim.”
He explained that the authorities never apprehended the man seen on CCTV, yet he was summoned for questioning and had to enlist legal representation.
“The actual attacker was never arrested, yet I was being investigated for affray,” he added.
Muyiwa said the ordeal dragged on for three months before the case was finally dropped due to insufficient evidence.
