U.S. Introduces ‘self-deportation’ app to facilitate voluntary exits

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new mobile application, CBP Home, designed to assist undocumented immigrants in voluntarily leaving the country.

This initiative, an extension of the CBP One platform previously used for asylum applications, aligns with the administration’s broader immigration strategy to encourage self-deportation while conserving enforcement resources.

Through the app, individuals can declare their intent to exit the U.S. voluntarily, potentially avoiding the legal repercussions of forced removal and maintaining their eligibility for future legal entry.

To use the platform, users must provide personal details, including a photograph, biographical information, and proof of financial capability to depart.

According to DHS officials, this digital tool aims to streamline the departure process and reduce the strain on immigration enforcement agencies.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the app as an opportunity for individuals to leave on their own terms, stating, “The CBP Home app gives aliens the option to leave now and self-deport, so they may still have the opportunity to return legally in the future and live the American dream.”

To promote the initiative, the U.S. government has launched a $200 million domestic and international advertising campaign, urging undocumented migrants to “Stay Out and Leave Now.” The campaign is part of the administration’s efforts to restore integrity to the immigration system and focus enforcement on individuals considered security risks.

While officials present CBP Home as a humane alternative to detention and forced deportation, some immigration experts remain cautious about its effectiveness.

Colleen Putzel-Kavanaugh of the Migration Policy Institute noted that the program’s success will depend on public awareness and voluntary participation.

The app is now available for free on mobile application stores, with automatic updates for existing CBP One users.

As the U.S. government continues refining its immigration policies, CBP Home represents a shift toward technology-driven enforcement measures.
